The largest hydrogen refueling station in South China began operation in Guangzhou's Baiyun District on Wednesday.
The Liangtian hydrogen refueling station has a maximum daily refueling capacity of 4,000 kilograms, equivalent to the total capacity of four typical medium-sized hydrogen refueling stations.
Occupying 4,650 square meters, the station is equipped with four hydrogen dispensers and eight independent hydrogen nozzles, each with a refueling flow rate of up to 3.6 kilograms per minute, which can greatly reduce vehicles' waiting time, according to a spokesperson from Yuntao Hydrogen Energy Technology. The company built and now operates the station.
The station will effectively address the hydrogen supply bottleneck in the region and meet the daily refueling needs of more than 200 large logistics vehicles and buses, the spokesperson explained.
By leveraging partnerships with firms covering the entire hydrogen chain, such as Sinopec's Guangzhou branch and Guangdong Shaoguan Iron & Steel Co., Yuntao has established a multi-level hydrogen supply system that ensures a stable and cost-effective hydrogen supply across the province, the spokesperson noted.
Currently, the Liangtian station sets the price for hydrogen refueling at 27.5 yuan (US$3.8) per kilogram, the lowest in Guangdong. The province has set a timetable for all hydrogen stations to gradually lower their prices: from 28 yuan per kilogram this year to 22 yuan in 2028.
Guangzhou has been investing heavily in the hydrogen industry. The city provides subsidies to hydrogen refueling stations that meet certain operational scale thresholds, as well as to developers and manufacturers of hydrogen fuel cell systems or hydrogen fuel vehicles.
Of all vehicles registered in Guangzhou, more than 1,000 are powered by hydrogen fuel. The city has been building hydrogen industrial parks and has incubated more than 100 companies in the sector.
